After coultless hours of searching the initernet with little sugsess finding web sites about muay thai i stumbeled onto the jackpot. The three best muay thai sites on the internet. These sites have up to the day fight resultes form the main stadiums in bangkok. They have REAL forums that talk about actual important stuff in muay thai. And to top it all off you can talk to actual people who live in bangkok and know the real thai fighters, not the cheap muay thai "instructors" in the US who claim to muay thai experts, but have even never seen a real thai.

muay thai 2000- results and scheduals for fights at lumpini and rajadmern

AX kickboxing- Detailed reports from the big fights all over the world

choke muay- lots of pics form the big fights in in bangkok

There are some very good, real, and respectable MT instructors in the U.S.! So what do you mean?

Things in this MT forum are important to those who are posting (most of the time). There may be some threads that aren’t to your liking but I have sure learned and appreciated many of them. It does seam that a lot of people here that post on this MT forum either are new to MT or never done it but are interested it, but there is still some valuable information here. They need info too.

So what do you mean by real? There is more to MT than learning fighter information and what fights are going on where and with whom. If that’s the stuff you’re most interested in then this is probably not the best place to get a lot of that info. There are sites that are specific to that and you have found a few. So why don’t you stick with them. That’s the beauty of it if you don’t like this forum there are others.

          Those are good sites.

But I, too, am curious as to what you're implying. Especially in regards to "What is IMPORTANT in Muay Thai" and your feelings on "real" fighters and "real" instructors. You seem to have a bias against US instructors.

In my post i was being to general, there are many good muay thai instructors in the US, but for every good instructor there are 10 bad instructors. Instructors who are out of toutch with the muay thai world. Instructors who have never fought in muay thai, and have never even studied with someone who has fought in muay thai. So the muay thai that is being tought is not pure, it has been combined with a bunch of other crap. This is expecially true with you JKD people, who want to combine every martial art to try to get the "best one". By doing this muay thai has been watered down.

I started my martial arts training when i was 4 in goju ryu. Then when i was 14 i started JKD and studied that for 1.5 year, before i started "muay thai" at the same school. I fell in love with muay thai and realized how ridiculous JKD was. I trained in muay thai for half a year before i took a trip out to san fran to train with a thai (two time lumpini champ). The thai picked apart my muay thai so much i felt like an idiot. From that day on i have never trusted TBA muay thai.

Dose that answer some of your questions..

I usually never get involved in forums like this one, but I have to say you are ridiculous to make statements like that "watered down". I mean c'mon.

Number 1, you can never compare a thai to anyone else, and for you to do so is crazy.

Number 2, anybody that is really into martial arts will NEVER compare styles, by saying "other crap", in my view is very childish...

Number 3, I don't know where your from but here in america if you don't like the way someone teach's there class, then stop going!

Who do you train with now?? Since you are back from your trip, what do you do now? How long have you been training thai? Have you had any fights?? Have you ever been to thailand??

Those are questions I would like answered!!!! And just incase you want to know my background I'll tell you now (15yrs striaght muay thai/mma, fight record of 35-5-5, fought twice in thailand, trained at fairtex, etc, etc..) would you trust me as a trainer (I'm not thai)?

I understand what you're saying, but you have to understand that the TBA is a HUGE organization with quite a large number of certified instructors. Not all instructors are the same.

Sure, there are some instructors that have not fought, or have not trained underneath someone who fought. I can understand why you consider that to be a problem. But think of it from another perspective....

The TBA instructor/s whom you no longer trust are the ones who helped you fall in love with Muay Thai. They must have been doing SOMETHING right!

I have met, trained with, and even fought against many TBA students, instructors, and fighters. Not all of them are cut from the same cloth. There are many amongst the TBA ranks who have an insane amount of training, knowledge, and fighting experience.

Don't paint all TBA instructors with the same brush....

(FYI- I am not a TBA instructor, in case you are wondering)

                Further...

"the muay thai that is being tought is not pure, it has been combined with a bunch of other crap. This is expecially true with you JKD people, who want to combine every martial art to try to get the "best one". By doing this muay thai has been watered down."

What you are describing above is JKD, not Muay Thai. I have never seen JKD people advertise their JKD as being Muay Thai. They merely give credit where credit is due by educating their students when they are working on skillsets that are derived from or based on Muay Thai. But make no mistake, it is still JKD.

"i started JKD and studied that for 1.5 year, before i started "muay thai" at the same school. I fell in love with muay thai and realized how ridiculous JKD was."

Again, I will point out how you started studying Muay Thai at the same JKD school and fell in love with it. Again, I say that the instructors were obviously doing SOMETHING right, even if you refuse to see it.

"I trained in muay thai for half a year before i took a trip out to san fran to train with a thai (two time lumpini champ). The thai picked apart my muay thai so much i felt like an idiot. From that day on i have never trusted TBA muay thai."

Bunkerd, perhaps? Yeah, hes pretty amazing. But then again, any Lumphinee champ is going to be amazing, and would be able to pick apart almost anyones techique. I trained for years under a VERY reputable Thai coach here in the USA. Then I started training under another Thai who was a former Lumphinee and Radjadamnern Champ, and he does the same thing. He is able to pick apart things that I've been taught.

Its no knock on my previous coach, who I still train with and fight for as well. Its just a difference of perspective. There is more than one way to train, more than one way to fight. There is always going to be someone who can show you a better or more efficient way to do something.

For instance, I have a boxing coach who has completely picked apart my boxing technique that I've learned over the years, both from Muay Thai and Boxing coaches. But he is quick to point out that there isn't really anything WRONG with what I've been taught, just that there are more efficient methods to accomplishing the tasks at hand.

Okay, so you trained JKD for 18 months before you decided it was ridiculous, then you trained Muay Thai for 6 months and got your butt handed to you by an instructor at Fairtex. Also you're around seventeen years old.

                  My advice to the young:

                  1) keep your assumptions to yourself. The very person you're accidentally insulting might be the guy with the answers you're looking for.

                  2) Admit you went a little too far in this post, and eveyone will gladly forget about it.

Also- welcome to the forum, please stick around.

                    Alex,

In a way, I understand where you're coming from, but you should also understand "to each their own." For instance, my first martial arts experience was learning JKD concepts at a Recreational Center. Although I enjoyed it very much in the beginning, I soon realized that my training in grappling (which I wanted to pursue further) was incomplete, so I left to pursue grappling on my own.

For some people, taking bits and pieces from other arts may work well, but for me, it didn't. I wanted to learn complete arts so that I had a clear and complete understanding of each. Hence, I took up boxing for hands, TKD for kicking (and a short stint in Muay Thai) and BJJ for grappling... But through it all, I don't discredit JKD, because it introduced me to my own path.

                    Best regards,
                    Paul

I was not tring to offend or disrespect any of you. I know none of you, so i can not know your qualifications. I was just tring to show you some good sites that i have made good contacts with. but it has been my eexperience that people in this circle (JKD, wing chun, Philipino ma, Muay thai, silat) are not as good as they claim to be, and kind of in it for the money. I was not talking to any of you spicificly, so please do not take it personaly.

to answer some of the other questions...

i only have 3 boxing fights no muay thai fights, here is why

as i have said before i trained at a jkd, kali, muay thai school ( dont want to say any names) for 2 years. About 6 months after i started going there just for my classes, i realized that the only way i was going to get good (it worked, being there one year i was in the advanced class and was the same rank as most the people that had been there for 4 and 5 years) was to train every day. so i started going at 4 and staying to 8 every day, the whole time my school was open. at the same time a boxed that had just moved to town was training at our school for a fight, he saw potential in me and started training me. we ended re starting the boxing program, i had 3 fights, then 6 months later we had to leave the school and find somewhere to train. we never did so we all split up. i stayed at the martial arts school and was told that i was going to still fight. 1 year later i had no more fights and no trainer because the instructor at the school was not willing to put the time in to train me of find me fights, like he said he would. that is about the time i went to san fran, when i came back i found out that my school was going to close, and i would have no where to train, unless, ofcorse, i was willing to pay 90$ an hour to train privatly with my instructor, wich i can not afford. so i got my self a student so i could keep training and opened a free gym in my basement, now i have my boxing coach back and we are training every day. i have a fight in a week

Bro’ that is pretty lame I can see why you are so jaded and frustrated.

I started in Muay Thai in the early 80’s and couldn’t get any fights either. I don’t think it was my instructors fault though we were the only program in the state at the time. I traveled to other states a few times to fight in kickboxing but at my own expense. It was fun but in the end it went nowhere. I was frustrated too. I went into the military and where I was stationed there were no Muay Thai, so continued to train in other MAs.

Believe me I have had my share of bad instructors and those that just want money. I trained with Master Toddy good training but he couldn’t care less about me. I thought I was suppose to train with him and paid big bucks for one on one but after the first day all I got is one of his other instructors. I was disappointed.

I traveled to Thailand and trained but by this time I was getting out of my fighting prime so by the time I had my first real Muay Thai fight I was pushing 30 ( okay 27). I have only fought 5 times under MT rules and I feel bad that I didn’t have more opportunities.

I guess from this perspective it can be hard to find a good coach.

If you have opportunities don’t let them pass you by. Go after it!
