  • People need to wake up and smell the coffee.

In a real fight there is pushing, pulling, punching, knees, elbows smashing, hair pulling, pulling each other to ground, pinning your opponent to the ground while smashing him in face, head locks, sometimes broken knee caps, broken jaws etc. in other words everything goes.

Other then the fact that there is no grappling in MuayThai it is pretty close to the real thing as far as fighting stand up.Now if talking about MMA like Pankration then you are getting even closer to a real fight for all the reasons above.

Well in Pankration you learn about how to use knees, elbows, punching and kicking properly and stand up grappling, taking person to ground and defending yourself while on the ground so you don't get pinned and how to get out of head locks, sounds like all the things I've mentioned above about what people do in a real fight, plus avoiding being the one who loses, which should be proof enough that arts like Pankration,Shooto and a few others like them must be the closest you can get to a real fight then your typical traditional art that does alot of katas and useless point sparring.

I grew up fighting through out elemantry, high school, and early 20's to defend myself have both seen and experienced how a real fight goes. You want to know how to defend yourself then you need to know how to defend against anything that can be used on the street. The only real difference between Pankration and a real fight is there is sparring equipment and rules and it doesn't teach how to defend against a weapon like a knife other then that it is pretty close to the real thing.Another reason why it can be said such tournaments like UFC,SABAKI,and PRIDE are as close as you can get to the real thing.

Martial Artists are just too afraid to admit it.

If you live in Canada the chances of someone pulling a knife in a fight is very slim unless in high school regardless of how serious the media makes it look.

No kata techniques and stances are going to help save your ass on the street.

All the best fighters have been pankrationists, shooto fighters, muay thai fighters, boxers and grapplers and why is this? Simple we all learn to fight and don't waste time with forms, we go straight to the point and also we don't take shit from anyone when we fight both in and outside of the ring.

Some people need to wake up and smell the coffee.

    • Free-Form?

      What about Luta Livre?

Free-form fighting would seem the closest thing. It also doesnt seem to be spoiled by mass-marketing yet. Does anyone have experience with Luta Livre that they'd like to share? It's really interesting, but I'm having problems finding quality information.

Just type Luta Livre on google and you will find all the quality info you'd like.
The closest to fighting in the street is fighting in the street, in the gym they will never tell you that in the street you can also stick a key in one's eye nor they will tell you to hit the balls or when grappling that you can also bite and do what ever it takes to win the fight!! It's a question of survival!

so, are you contented to fight someone who doesnt want to fight?????

yesterday i met someone in the street, we argue for a small little thing, i didnt expect that he is easily loose tempered..... my inner sence tell me that he is already loose tempered..... so i immediately said to him, "Hey look at the stupid bird, the car would bump at it"..... as he look to which my finger pointed towards the opposite direction...... i immediately turn away so fast that too late for him to notice that i am already gone for a distance......

The most important thing to do is to remember the 1001 ways to avoid quarrels, fightings, mis-understandings, etc.....

cause its very useless, i still wont fight..... i will do anything just to fade away......

a house cat is a very good example

            I think thats called a pussy-cat.

This tactic of "look over there" and then running away...comeone. What are you going to do when he sees you next time? This is the oldest trick in the book. You would have done better hitting him for his stupidity.

.....1001 ways to aviod quarrels, fighting, misunderstandings.....
sometimes the best self-defense is simply learning how to control the situation. Running away is not always the best solution.

I am surprised that you do not take Zaga Bongo up on his offer to spar and instruct you in the ways of boxing. You would think that would be a great honor. I have seen you challenged in other threads, but Zaga Bongo is being polite and professional. What are you afraid to learn?

I have seen you putting down MT before, and then a MT pamphlet was put online to show you MT moves. Since then you have incoorporated the Thai kick, and plan on using it in sparring sessions with your friend. Why not learn boxing from a polite foreigner wanting and willing to instruct? Most people would not get an opportunity like this their entire life. You cannot waste opportunities to learn.

Bruce Lee seems to be your idol. He learned as many styles as possible and was not confined. You should try and emulate your idols, and not be afraid of being them.

You said that you could not afford to take martial arts classes for the last 7 years, and you turn down free instruction. How many dollars would it cost to get you into some classes? I might be willing to set up a Sherwinc ignorance relief fund.

            • .....Boxiados...

I always search google before asking stupid questions. However, most of what I find is not English. I am limited by my language on this one. Thank you for the reply, though.

my only advice to you as my true friend is:

pls quit on whatever martial arts style that you presently practice.... then switch to a new/old system of combat and that is what we called "KungFu"

pls..... this is for your own good, you'll find out later that i am right......

                OK???????????

                      • if u are looking for something thats for real go with a combat art not a fighting art. Old school is just better if it worked for 1000yrs why wouldn't work now, after all a human is still a human.

Yeah, why use something that has proven useful more recently than 500 years ago?

                            • very interesting but...

I'm sorry but I must put my 2 cents in after reading all 20 some pages of post. I think this has become a bit to much on which art is better. You say Kung Fu is old but so is Muay Thai, about 4000 if I'm not mistaken. Both arts, if you have enough training are equally good. Muay Thai is good because of its simplicity of techniques, Kung Fu is good because it trains the body. But niether are better then the other. I took muay thai for a year untill the place went under due to poor finacial handling, but the one thing I can say that after I had a better understand of my body, which helped me win the first fight I've been in after about 5 years since my last fight which I'm more then happy to say because I hate fighting. I believe fighting out of anger proves nothing other then who has a bigger ego. You both present good arguements but please, stop with the arguement. A muay thai fighter could beat a kung fu master, and a kung fu master could beat a muay thai fighter. It doesn't matter though because the experienced have nothing to prove. I know I'm repeating what others have said but I'd like to stop this arguement. PEACE MY BROTHERS!

Yeah, walking on your hands will help you win a streetfight

Does Ngoki Forearm training attract the ladies?
