Newspaper aint bad, but i prefer a magazine with a heavy spine (maxim )

Great for a shot under the chin newspaper and bandanas both make great covers for a BIG knife, as does a book...ask the guy to take a look at this bible passage and when he looks responds you pop him from under it

      Ha Ha Ha,
I'm not sensitive about people challenging my ideas (I welcome that), it's those DAMN little smilies giving me the finger () that gets my blood going, but that's another story

I do apologize for the following comment, it was uncharacteristic of me.

Butterfly knives are illegal in my state, that qualifies as a banned weapon... I only have one but it's just a cheapo, I never carry it or use it except for playing with it...

It is really too bad my little K-bit is illegal because I do carry that. Two things that push the letter of the law... don't quote me here,eh...I'm going off my memory here. One is the ring, it's steel and could be considered a "knuckle" which is illegal and two, it's in my pocket. That's the tricky part because it's a fixed blade. Exposed it's fine, folded in the pocket is fine. Fixed and concealed... no no.

Mine is a mere 1 inch blade. Nothing like a real knife. Still a banned weapon if you cross the wrong LEO at the wrong time in the wrong place.

not exactly a banned weapon, but certainly not a smart one...the 2 guys fighting SCA style at the end is pretty funny also

You'd be justified if you did! The reason the ancient Chinese used chinese terminology is ... wait for it ... they were Chinese! We ought to call it a front kick and just be done with it. Ordinarily, I am an outspoken advocate of people's right to train for whatever reason they choose, but since we're on a forum dealing specifically with effect-based martial arts as they apply to "Urban Combat," I feel a little more free to point out silliness when I see it.

You seem to have taken my attempts at humor a little personally. I apologize. I just wanted to head things off before you introduced ideas like the angle of the wrists, elbows, and shoulders, the drag coefficients of the weapon and the fists, the angle of the weapon to the target, and all the other possibilities into the equations listed.

That type of thinking isn't small. It's practical. It's knowing that some things - while scientifically relevant - have absolutely no pragmatic purpose when it comes to achieving a desired effect. Knowing the scientific equations for determining mass, velocity, momentum, kinetic energy? That's all fine and good for making you feel smarter than the rest of the people you're talking to, but the fact is, a guy who works in a brake shop in the Bronx and trains every day to punch holes into heavy bags is going to beat you stupid whether he knows your equations or not. So since you like to spout random and pointless physics, please, by all means, continue. It's a free country, and you're allowed. I, as a resident of that same free country, am allowed to pick on you for it. Just don't forget to cite the equations that explain why my focus on pragmatism is more self-important than your focus on equations that don't really relate to fighting ability. Mayhaps we can all discover why you're so sensitive when it comes to other people challenging your ideas.

Get over yourself. You're just mad because your students probably put a lot of faith in your mathematical explanations until I went and screwed things up by pointing out that they didn't matter...
you mean understanding the importance of velocity (speed) is pointless? What about ol' Benny the Brake Guy who's pushing the heavy bag around with his fists instead of punching it? He's gonna make someone mad when he pushes them down

On behalf of nerds everywhere, I apologize for K.E.=1/2m*v^2 being too complex for you

            Just jokes man!!!

hmm lets get the post back on track folks.........

any idea why Bali-songs (butterfly knives) are Illegal yet the market is awash with "assisted" knives that are every bit as quick opening?

are these type knives legally classified as switchblades?

if so why are they sold openly at sporting good stores with no legal warnings?

If not why is the Bali-song STILL Illegal? it takes a certin amount of skill to open a balisong quicker than a "assited" blade? although I am pretty fast with the Icepick grip opening. yet these knives are everywhere, just another silly law I question, what do you think?

there are plenty of stores where you can buy cheaply made balisongs, and they offer no legal advice about carrying them. Getting searched and having a knife on you can get you into shit anyway. The legal size is different in different places, and in some states, even having a fixed blade knife concealed upon your person can give you some serious grief.

Best bet I think...would be to carry a leatherman tool. It offers more of an alibi to itself than carrying something else...especially the balisong, which looks menacing. The balisong is made for maiming and killing (of course if you know how to use it to pinch, entangle, and manipulate joints like a pocket stick it can be used as a non-lethal weapon...but regardless, it's only true function is as a weapon.)

even carrying a pocket knife could lead to some questions if found...why are you carrying it, what is it for, etc...
Be ready to answer those questions, and NEVER say self-defense, because it gives "intent" to commit harm. Complain about dull knives at steak houses, or that you eat on the run alot, and are sick of having to use shitty plastic utensils that break on plates..etc. Even eat with the knife in public, amongst friends, so that you have people who've witnessed you using a knife in that fashion.

Or...have the knife be small enough that you can clean your fingernails with it, cut peices of string off of clothes...tailor stuff, arts and crafts...etc. Just have excuses ready.

(seems like they fucked us on the 2nd Amendment huh? Can't even carry a knife for personal safety?!!)

That's not "understanding" for a fighter. That's "complicating a simple idea."

You want a fighter to understand velocity? Tell him to punch or kick faster and build a training progression around the idea. A slide rule or scientific calculator is completely and totally worthless in the gym when compared to a stopwatch and a good coach.
So you are saying real fighters don't understand physics? LOL

                      banned weapons

i dont really see the point in carrying banned weapons around...it's harder to explin if you get caught with them, a butterfly knife while some find it a useful weapon it can only be discribed are that...a weapon, on the other hand a sturdy umbrella, walking stick or even a box cutter can be explained away with a simple

"sorry officer..i was stacking the shelves at work and must have forgotten to take the box cutter out of my pocket...silly me this is so embarrassing" of course if your hanging around a local trouble spot on a saturday night this technique may not be particuatly.......effective,

personaly i believe a few banned weapons aren't a danger when the owner is responsible, trained to use them and above all knows when it's appropriate to use them, but most banned weapons are banned because of untrained, unrestrained, undisiplined nut jobs who intened on causeing real harm to people

comments, queries, critisims and compliments are welcomed

If you lived in a high crime neighborhood and your life was threatend by a small gang who knew where you lived, would you take the chance on converting a semi auto rifle to fully auto knowing you would ditch it later? I think I would take the gamble since the police probably wouldn't be able to help me or I would be labled a "snitch" or whistleblower. And this all assumes that I am a hardworking Joe with a family and not involved with the Gang subculture.

                          good question,

personaly i would, so long as i felt i had the restraint to use it only when required, the skill to make the most of a fully automatic rifle and the disipline to dich it when it was all over

this would only be a resonable response if you were in serious shit, like barricade your self in the house and pray kinda thing....not just a response to a "threat"

                            No....

Move. This is the stupidest thing on the thread next to the physics of a stick. Can you say retaliate? You shoot them, they shoot you... where will it end? Get a legitimate carry permit and use a legal gun if you must be armed be educated first. YOUR Safety is a serious issue.

It's not rocket science folks. Sometimes the simple solutions escape us because we look a little too far. Or not.

Go hit something. But don't use your head.

wow, coverting a weapon to full auto, reducing a shotgun or rifle barrel to under 18" or attempting to silence a weapon are all felonies.

plus its not as simple as you think without a working knowledge of firearms and some basic gunsmithing skills.
