                  • Ahh.. knife fighting.

I have no set technique to knife fighting seeing that situations are the knife.

Most attackers are not knifefighters. which means they won't take fighting stance to tell you what they intend to hurt you. Most muggers with knives would use the element of surprise and come from behind and threaten you with a knife under your throat. (been there done that). Now it may look like a text book self defense situation but feeling steel under yur throat is a very different proposition.

personally at such close quarters i prefered they use a gun because a gun requires them to pull the trigger (1.5 second window of opportunity: try it hold a toygun while sparring and be in striking distance of your partner. pull the trigger or say bang when you HONESTLY see him move a muscle chances are he'd have made enough time to atleast move out of the way). Such opportunity is lacking even agaisnt an absent minded knife wielder. He does not need to make a mistake. If you make a mistake you cut your own throat without his help.

anyway it does not mean I have not method. its this:
                    1. get as far way from the knife as possible (whether by running or grabbing his knife hand or pushing him. which technique is always with in the context of the situation).

                    2. get the knife out of his hand (again which technique depends on the situation: wristlock, ball grab, wrist bite elbow break, heli spin...hmm i think i with overboard with that one)

                    3. de-escalate the situation (kill him, run away, scream for help)

now in case you'd want to grab the knife hand, elbow the solar plexus slip under his arm and give him an elow lock... rememeber that you'd have to find the solar plexus first. If he's taller than you you'd hit his six pack, if shorter he would not be stupid enough to pull it off on you. then think about trying to chamber your elbow and adding torque to it without your throat getting sliced.

what happened to me wasn't pretty. i even had my fingers on a death point. but darn adrenaline locked out my fine motor movement. it ended up being a ground fight (thank God i was ready for that). I wouldn't have wanted to go to the ground seeing that he had two others waiting on the wings but fortunately for me they did not want to enter the fray (sheer luck).

knife fights. a real killer would walk up to you in a crowd, stab you and walk away. no one will ever see the knife. awareness is you only defense in those circumstances.

That`s the word, awareness. Be on alert know where you are, know your surrounding. Trust your instinct, when you feel that someone is following you be ready don`t allow him or them to get close to you.

Thats` what my training prepared me, my instinct & auto reaction against sudden approaching person or object against me.

I had once three man following me, I tried to shake them off but they suddenly jump me from behind. I was able to react immidiately , I swing around while parrying them away from me as they were trying to wrap their arms around me.

It happened so fast, that all three ended up 6 or 7 feet infront of me. One of the guy was ordering the other to quickly stab me. It was dark, I couldn`t see the knife clearly but I could see he had his hand beside his waist. I guess two of the guys lost interest or got intimidated becuase I went on a fighting stance ( kung fu stance ) that they walk away, the third guy stay awhile but seeing his freinds walk away he decided to take off as well.

When somebody startle someone, what is their usual reaction? do they satnd still? or do they suddenly punch or kick? or do they suddenly went on a fighting guard stance? Their reaction will depends on their training & conditioning.

One time I went to this dinosour horror house with my kids. They were at that time 7, 9 & 11 years old. Inside it was dark just like jurasic park & suddenly dinosours will jump out to scare people. In one area this raptor suddenly jump out beside me with a big roar it startled me & I autoreacted with a punch to the dinosour`s face. The dinosour costume person inside must have felt the punch becuase he walk back inside without attempting to scare the back line. hehehe my 7 yr old daughter got so scared she hang so tight at my legs while my 9 yr old run all the way to the front line & to the exit. This happened about 10 yrs ago in Manila.

Konghan did what he had to do and was very lucky the things turned out like they did. Sounds like those guys wanted easy prey and when Konghan turned out not to be so easy they decided to leave.

Remember A crazed maniac wielding a knife will not allow you to simply grab the knife arm like you are used to doing in MA class. He will be thrusting and retracting, and slashing very quickly and with intent. If you are left fighting this guy empty handed then go for the knife hand controls/disarms just remember if you are lucky enough to grab the knife arm he still has a free arm (or maybe a 2nd knife), an elbow, two knees and feet, teeth to bite you with and a head in which he can head but.

The basic triage works like this a knife is pulled by the attacker- retreat, retreat behind an obstacle to keep between you and the attacker such as a table, car, tree, and etc. Gain access to a weapon, use distance enhancers like a firearm, pool cue, chair, tree branch, 2x4, throw things such as beer mugs, rocks/bricks pull a knife of your own, finely feet (kicks), and etc.

well, you are forgetting one key element in your explanation; and that's threat analyzation...
you see, when most people are startled, their mind will automatically try to determine what the threat is and whether or not it really is a threat...it only takes a split second for this to happen, that's why most of us don't go around punching at thin air when we hear a loud noise, or punch out our friends or family when their playing jokes on us..

that's why i don't think your theme park example is a real good one...you knew you were at a theme park, you knew there gonna be things jumping out to try and scare u, yet u still decided to punch the guy in the face? that definitely is not a good example of awareness...sorry..

Its not a plan punch or a dicision making one, its more of a reflex. There are certain situation were in there is no time to assess a sudden suprise attack. Even if its a freind who wants to play tricks on you by jumping out from a dark corner. Your reaction must be decisive espacially if the threat is right in your face or something that is unidentifiable " shoot now talk later". Unless there is some distance between you & the attacker then you will have some time to assess the threat.

Thats` why in special forces, they are trained to react & assess sudden threat situation only on pre-identified targets. But for close encounters or unidentified threats of between 2 feet in a dark area the officer will have to count on their instinct to react. And that is why we have "accidental" firing or shooting of innocent people at close range becuase there was no room or time to assess the threat level but only to react in self defense. " I thought he had a gun?" I thought he was one of them?" " he shouldn`t have jump me from behind" " there was no time, its either him or me" those kind of situation.

I`m just using those as an example. Martial art is no different. In our situation its the dark streets & ally ways, the strangers that are giving us the looks, or unidentified people predenting to be freindlies.

In fact here is another incident, three years ago me & my family went to Seattle to celebrate New Year. As we were walking along the space needle park area. Two male approached my 15 yr old daughter. I guess they thought she was alone becuase she was walking in front of us, then they put their arms around her. My daughter got startle & just stood there. I immitiately approached them from behind & ask them with an authorirativre voice " Hey!what`s going on here, what you guys doing?" then suddenly they took their arms off her & ( I can tell they were pretending) to ask were is the space needle? when in fact it was right infront of them. I pointed it to them then they walk away murmuring to each other.

And I`ve been telling & teaching my daughter always be on the look out against approaching strangers, if somebody approached you don`t let them put their arms around you or let alone let them get too close. Always keep a safe distance from approaching strangers.

In fact my auto reaction almost got me into trouble 5 years ago here in Canada. Becuase here, one is not allowed to put ones hand or touch another person in an heated argument. They can be at each other`s faces yelling & cursing but they are not allowed to touch, to touch is consider an assault ( crazy rule ). I always stick my hands out & push away anyone who try to get too close & I would react against sudden approached. It was a good thing my boss back me up but I had to apologised to that guy for "a slight push" because he refuse to leave the premises which I was guarding at that time.
