It is very possible to get out of the line of fire at close range. You guys should rent a documentary from brazil called bus 424 (the # might be wrong, but you can rent the shit at hollywood video or blockbuster. It's all live footage from a hostage situation in brazil, at the very end, they lure this poor guy out and a guy comes running up from the side with an MP5 he had clicked to semi-auto...point blank range, just by turning to see him rush in, the skel fucking dodges the line of fire, by bullet two he turns, the bullet hits his female hostage in the face, he fires once, into the hostage(probably an accident, by the way), and the other killing the cop who tried to gun him down.
He gets it though. It's a sad ass story. I recommend it for the sociological and philisophical questions it raises about the societies in which we live, and about how shit in the real world works.

          Dodging Bullets Kata.

          Hm.

What are you picturing when you ask this question?

What is it about a kata that makes you think there might be the SLIGHTEST BAREST chance that doing a particular dance movement in your basement or back yard is going to help you TOTALLY defy physics?

The way to deal with guns is to avoid them. Avoid the places that they are, avoid the people that think they have to carry them, and avoid the situations that seem to bring them out. Own them and train with them, sure. But avoid them, other than that.

If you find one on you, someday, pointed at you.. well. This is the best advice I have, and it comes from someone who is half an idiot.

          1) Give up whatever they want. Happily. Make it clear you don't want to resist.

          2) FIGHT LIKE HELL explosively, quickly. Get both hands on the gun arm if you can.

I have no idea which to suggest to anyone. Number (1) is my favorite answer. But I've seen (on video tape) that lots of people think they have to shoot their hostage even if it complies. So I dunno if number 1 is the best answer.

Number 2 would be mostly if you see they aren't going to let you live, by their mannerisms, and so forth. I don't think you should let anyone tie you up, or put you in a confined space (a refrigerator, or a trunk). Odds are (in my opinion) things aren't going to get better for you after your hands are immobilised.

Explosive action can help, if it is instantaneous and very very determined. It isn't expected by an attacker (I don't think?) so if it's fast and hard, you might live. Might. Dunno, tho.

I think if someone has a gun on you, you'd better be aware of death and made your terms with it. Realize we all die. And if the gun is on you, and they want to put you in a car trunk or tie your hands, then maybe the time is now.

Dunno, buddy. I'd DEFINITELY avoid any teacher teaching "bullet dodging kata" like the plague. Or, bring a .22 revolver to class, tell him it's a low powered bullet so he should have no trouble dodging it, and give his skills a shot. (pun intended).

If he's willing to give it a shot, and succeeds, perhaps I'd show up one day and learn "bullet dodging kata" from him, too.

Back In The Seventies There Was A Martial Artist Guy Who Would Catch Bullets With His Special Made Teeth. I Saw Him On Wide World Of Sports More Than Once.he Had Metal Teeth That He Would Put In His Mouth Like Dentures.
But He Ended Badly. You Guessed It He Ended Up Dying By Missing The Mark By A Little Too Much And Getting Shot In The Head I Think Thru The Mouth. But Not On Tv

Actually, no joke, I saw it too when I was little. I remember my dad calling the guy a fool.

Of course, it all could have been staged or something..but I saw it too. Dude caught a bullet in his teeth.

                          Lets read it...

I'll put my money on Bob Munden or me and my .22 rimfire because I know what we can do with a gun. Paintballs are slow enough individually to evade from some distance but the same connot be said for supersonic projectiles.

Barriers and evasive maneuvering can make an average amatuer shooter miss but don't count on ducking something aimed at your head.

Catching bullets with your teeth is a trick. Can you say "ILLUSION"?

In fact, putting a projectile through the teeth (from the front) is an old sniper trick as it is the most direct route to the Medulla/C-1...

"Through the teeth and past the toung, look out Medulla here it comes"
                          ...

If only I had learnd the art(when the bullets start to fly)

Needless to say : No martial artist alive can move faster than a bullet can travel. But there are plenty that can move faster than an expert shooter can redirect his aim (eg... reaction time of the shooter). You only have to move 1/2 inch + Your body width to get out of the line of fire. This is a martial art that is taught and used in actual combat dating back as long as guns have existed. For a more modern style of this art see KRAV MAGA!

Try that against a .50 cal. You only need to get within a foot of your target or so to completely tear pieces off their body. Not practical at all.
