I think that if you are an expert at strike fighting, you simply won't allow the fight to go to the ground. But once it does, you are screwed.
Whenever I have witnessed a real fight (for example at school), even though the kids involved were not expert martial artists, it would always go to the ground, and it would get very messy.
So, practicing a strike-fighting form (Kung-Fu), one of my biggest concerns has always been how to deal with a grappler. But the way I'm currently being taught, we do our kata, we are taught moves and combos, and then we spar (with protective equipment
). The point is, we are encouraged to develop our own styles, and find out what works and what doesn't work with our own body and natural tendencies. Everyone is different, and I am trying to create a style that works effectively with my body.
So based on my little experience, if I were to defend against a grappler, I would probably use a very low stance, which gives me solid footing, and my guard can then easily cover my mid section and head. The disadvantage is that I can not kick much from such a low stance. But with such a stable base, and solid guard, It is very hard for my oponent to grapple me, throw me or take me to the ground, and giving me ample opportunity to strike if he attempts to do so. If I can do that successfully (IF), I can only imagine what an expert strike fighter could do.
