I think that has more to do with mentality.

Training a knife for SD pretty much forces you to think the whole scenario through from anticipation, deployment, to follow through.

With a gun(or pepper spray, or a taser, or any other "one shot" solution) there's the notion that simply HAVING it is enough...I know plenty of people who think pepper spray in a big ass full purse is protection.

The "average" attacker is more likely to be deterred by a magically appearing gun rather than a knife...IMO.

Anway, this is all digression, I was just comparing Royce and Hughes - it's all about the net balance of skills, talents and attributes - Assuming all other skills, talents and attributes were equal (unlikely premise) the one skill/talent/attribute where one person has the advantage will tip the match in that person's favour.

This is intuitively obvious, therefore the hypothesis that GJJ or BJJ, when practiced perfectly, will gaurantee a victory against a bigger, stronger person is intuitively bullshit. I don't know how dem peeps can say that.

The bigger, stronger guy just has to be good enough in BJJ that combined with his other superior attributes (speed, strength, intelligence, endurance, creativity etc) the balance tips in his favour.

the only 'gaurantee' (of sorts) against a bigger/stronger aggressor is a weapon when he doesn't have one. In the words of Sean Connery "if he pulls a knife, you pull a gun".

About the god invented guns thing... Clearly a person invented guns. It's just a way to say it in perhaps a fun and zany way. That's why god invented figures of speech.

i certainly ain't no jesus nuthugger. I would love to have a discussion about the existence and nature of Jesus if you like .. probably not the right forum though

People fear knives MUCH more than guns.

Depends on what kinda gun or knife or person. I'd agree that generally people would be more afraid of the typical knife carrier though but by then it's too late....unless they're quick on the draw.

royce needs to go back to brazil and go train his ass off at Chute Box. he needs to beg Silva to train him in some strong standup. then he needs to go to japan and train under sakuraba to learn more grappling. just mabye then he would have a chance.

                        • Why does everyone assume that a gracie would be better on the ground than a non-gracie.

Dean Lister has nowhere near the amount of time training as Royce but he has won Abu Dhabi which Royce has not. I believe he is a better grappler and would win in a pure grappling competition. If this is true for Dean then why could it not be true for other people.

                          Matt out grappled Royce badly.

I dunno about all that, Lessons from Matt would probably suffice just fine, since according to Oma royce looked like a white belt in Matts hands, perhaps some further lesons from Matt are in order

anyway, maybe they should have pit a younger Gracie with Hughes, I mean come on, Royce is past his prime..

I don't know if Royce even tried competing in Abu Dhabi at all... However, I think he would lose badly too

I vote close this topic! It's basically the same posts being repeated over and over. I mean I can predict almost every post being posted in the mma/bjj forum by looking at the name, and I don't have special powers either!
