Usefulness of the guard in self-defense

This discussion isn't exactly going in the direction I had intended it to go. I just wanted to see what everybody thought about the possibility of the guard position (vs a standing or kneeling opponent) making oneself vulnerable to groin attacks as it involves spreading the legs and exposing the groin. Can this standup fighting vs ground fighting debate end for now?

the guard is just a last line of defense before you are mounted by your opponent. if you put him in guard you can still put your feet on his hips and push him/yourself away and disengage/standup/escape etc....
i dont think anyone ever advocated grabbing someone in the middle of a brawl with multiple opponents and, pulling them down into guard and trying to finish him.
the guard is what it is, just 1 position among many. it can be countered just like anything can, but you are better off knowing it than not knowing like its mentioned.

He was chased out in humiliation more than once, came crawling back on his belly only to be run out of town again with his tail between his legs, and now he has sent you generic lackeys to whine in his place. The fact that YOU exist to suck the ass of such a loser really says it all about you.

My concern is that lying on the ground and spreading ur legs apart to wrap the opponent when he comes done to ground-fight with you leaves the groin open? I know that the guy in the guard can throw bicycle kicks at the guy standing up, but if the guy standing up attacks with a furious barrage of soccer kicks aimed at the groin, the guy in the guard can't throw bicycle kicks at the same pace. Also, a stomp kick or axe kick to the groin could be executed too.
Any ideas?
My friend said he'd been experimenting with a kind of half-butterfly guard in which you keep one leg around your opponent's hips and the other leg wedged between yourself and your opponent, with your foot on his thigh or hooked under it. Obviously such a guard is going to be a lot less secure than a traditional closed guard, but I would think that if you find yourself in bottom guard during a streetfight your top priority is generally going to be to sweep or reverse your opponent -- you probably aren't going to hang out there on the bottom waiting to pull off a submission.
I might ask my BJJ instructor this question at some point, but I imagine his advice would be similar.
P.S.: missed Dick's post before I posted -- he seems to be saying some of the same things

Boar has had multiple people who came out verified his martial abilities and posted to that effect on this board and many other boards. He has never refused to host anyone who wanted to see his school or abilities, you clearly can't say the same. Guess that means the only act here is yours boy, and it's old n moldy.
What I've seen is probably just the basics - everything he does has to do with fighting, he even relates forms applications.
The way he explains forms on videos (and demonstrates applications) you get the best of all worlds - the excercise, conditioning, culture then straight into no nonsense fighting applications.
