  • stand up is great, you guys kick the air and make loud yelling noises, punch the air making loud yelling noises, and test you skills how many times a night? a week? a year? In BJJ you test your skills every night. Thats why its superior.
But one of the greatest stand up fighters is Chuck Liddell, who demonstrates what it takes to not be taken down, one of the very few. This would be very different if it wasnt for weight classes. So my point is I dont know what

    • ok dude, so nobody is does bjj can defend themselves, they all just yell and kick? i guess we all should think like you. wasnt tito ortiz a real badass? i think in ufc he was number one? didnt he get his face punted in a bar, and get his beating? by a guy he would kill in the ufc?

all arts are good, see past the ego, etc. most guys in my neck of the woods carry blades, and whether its wimpy or not, its the street, other arts have far superior methods for self defense

and dont forget, i grapple, im not stupid, but ive seen masters from all styles, who i wouldnt mess with

theres plenty of capeira fights where those guys have knocked out bjj guys. wasnt helio kicked in the stomache, and hurt back in the day?> do some research.

bjj is no longer bjj, all bjj train boxing, sombo, greco, etc.

comparing to chuck lidell is stupid, i doubt you will fight chuck on the street, your comparing professional athletes. can any martial arts help you to beat a guy whos starts shit ion the street? i think so.

i will say it again, all arts are great if theres a qualified teacher teaching them, all have strongpoints, and all have weakness.

Well the story is that while in the U.k for ufc 37 i believe. Tito got in a bar fight and was dropped with a punch when he tried to get up/ go for a take down he was kicked in the face several times....it happened in front of pete millitich (sp) and another fighter named rob? rodriugez (sp) ....stories vary ....imagine that as to whether tito was actually k.o,ed, or not...but since tito wants revenge...HE must agree with all the witnesses who say he got his clock cleaned or to qoute Pat "tito got lit up like a christmas tree and dropped on his face in a fight in an alley behind the bar", tito has said he was drunk...he was jumped....he was sucker punched...basically Tito has complained it wasnt a fair fight... Hahahahaha
Can you imagine? someone gasp, fought dirty... funny thing tito never did any of those dirty things people are always talking about doing in retaliation...it seems once someone cheated and got the upper hand there was no coming back...yep sounds like real life to me.

all gong fu works, but to put two guys across a ring, and then say go! i would say that many times the grappler will win, but if your in a bar, and someone starts shit with you, and its on, i say gong fu has worked fine for me.

many gong fu guiys can stop the shoot, by train ing against it, but to say an elbow to the back, or finger jabs stop a fight, is nonsense, we spar that way, and nine out of ten times, the finger jab hits the forehead of a fast wrestler, and you mess your fingers up.

in the ufc, there has never been a descent wing chun guy, ever, and again, it my belief that ufc is for striking and grappling. throw some obstacles in the ring, like some cars, a fire hydrant, a bunch of people, a table, etc, and gong fu works fine, more like in real life, a fight rarely starts with two guys starting at oppositte ends of an opne space. last fight i had was on a subway, theres no way i was going to grapple.

if you keep things in prespective, all arts work fine, theres no majic art. one reason grapplers seem better is because on average it takes a bjj guy like 10 years to get a blackbelt, whereas a commercial gong fu school, many are belt factories and givbe one out in three years.also every bjj class you spar, and many gong fu schools dont spar enough.

i have seen indonesian grappling,, and its just as effective as bjj, but more street, i also train bjj, because it is very effective. but all the gong fu and karate guys in the world have done fine on the street for the last 60 years or so, and never needed bjj. the octagon is not the street,

i respect all arts, and my street experience leads me to believ each art has it strong points and weak points.
this post is pretty good and pretty acurate id say.

                • Take it to the ground

I've been a big fan of Gracie since I first seen him fight. Gracie is an artist one of the greatest, he did'nt have to throw punches and elbows to win, it's obviouse the man was superior in the octagon. Times change and fighters adapt. Never did like Shammy but you got to give him credit he's a tough S.O.B. well versed but not as good as Gracie on the ground. GJJ is a great proven style. 80% of all fights go to the ground at some point. I don't care how good of a striker you are if you have no grappling skills you're in big trouble weather it be compitition or street fight. It's basic instinct to clinch when in trouble. Some fighters are comfortable on the ground and a striker better be ready to take it to the ground. It is better to excell on the ground then stand up fighting. Speed vs Streangth (stay out of reach or get broken). It's a rare treat to see toe to toe action in a no holds bared fight this is an exception not the rule. Gracie was the forerunner his style (not GJJ nessasarily but ground techiniques in general) is emmulated by all the great fighters today. Strikers rely on luck as much as skill. Yes luck they count on their opponant making a mistake or letting down their guard, luck. Did you catch the fights Monday on Spike The first fight blondie clearly dominated the fight in all three rounds from the ground, ref made them stand up in the last minute 30 seconds left he got caught with a lucky knee went down and was choked out. LUCKY STRIKE! Anyone can throw a punch but do they know what to do if they can't? It's not about one style being better then another, it's what you know, how you apply it and how far you're willing to go with it. All great fighters have three things in common They have a true knowledge of fighting, they are physically capable of fighting but foremost they have heart. Without heart victory is short lived. Why do I go here; all the B.S. about guns and knives. I would like to see someone take a gun away from me! I'm old school, I'm not going to point my gun at you. and I'm not going to talk about it, B.S. I'm going to put a bullet between your eyes... Make no mistake about it, it's not that I'm going to use it, it's a done deal... You're dead period... Yea! stop this Mother ******! that's what I'm talking about. So many talk the talk but they don't walk the walk. Any man that pulls a weapon and does'nt have the heart to use it is an idiot, and he's a bigger idiot if he lets someone take it away from him.

well since you brought up guns and knives, and your ability to defeat ANY disarm, what weapons do you carry? where do you carry said pistol? is it IWB carry? what holster system do you find most comfortable for everyday wear?
what Make, model and caliber is this firearm and how often do you fire it? what rounds do you prefer for the street vs home defense?
how often do you practice weapon retention drills? whose schools of thought on combat pistolcraft do you subscribe to? Sorry for so many questions man but when someone of your obvious awesome ability enters into the fray its nice to know from where he got this wealth of knowledge...

Obviously not. I guess the Gutterfighter is bulletproof, right?
                              one quick question.
What makes you think just because you seen a man fight in the ring under regulations that he does'nt have any more tricks or that he can't fight just as dirty as a gutterfighter?
Just because a man holds back it does'nt mean that's all hes got.

                              • Well now it does'nt take a rocket scientist or a blackbelt to pull a trigger does it? It takes a lunatic with big balls or someone who has nothing to lose or everything to lose to squeeze the trigger that takes a mans life never the less he has to have heart enough to do it. When you figure out which of these I am let me know. If and when I resort to gun play believe me there will be no hesitation! Dead men can't disarm. If you must know my Mosberg 12ga cruiser with 3" 00 mags are always loaded for home defence, I keep 3" nitro steel shoot handy for shooting through walls and of coarse 3" mag slugs; you never know! Glock 17 9MM is my prefured defence pistal. Make no mistake I'm backwoods (Rednick, Hick or whatever) I keep in well practice with them. I don't have to be in a club or have a blackbelt to know how to use them although the training would be a big plus if was going to start a war or frequent hostile environments of which I do not plan. See I'm well past my prime I don't have the time or energy to f*** arround with you young wippersnappers, I'm not invinceable but I can hold my own, I'm not as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was. Don't get me wrong I would never pull a gun on anyone unless I believed that a life was at stake. I would have to believe that I'm dead if I don't pull the trigger. Being angry is not enough reason to kill someone but add a shot of fear and a man will do anything. I was tought don't do or say anything you're not willing to backup, eg.. if you pull a gun you had better use it cause you wont get a second chance. You would never get close enough to disarm me and I don't think you're fast enough to dodge bullets, unless your name is Neil and this is the Matrix. Gracie is no god but he was a great ground fighter and champion in the U.F.C. you don't think his opponants tried to hit him? What he didn't fight strikers? He didn't become a champion by getting punched he defended himself using his chosen style and it worked. To say he could be champion now days in the UFC is questionable, I do believe he could hold his own with any of the ground technicians today, but the compitition is greater and the fighters have evolved and are versed in multipal styles. I still hold that a striker has to be exceptionally good at defending a take down not to be put on the ground. Once on the ground with a technition the odds are against him.
