  • Free Kissing ?

hmmmmmmm....tae kwon do versus muah tai. Nice show of respect. muah is commonly used on the Internet for kiss or to kiss or kissing...and tai seems to be the bastardization of Thai, meaning free. So, tae kwon do versus free kisses? Only one winner there, I think.

    • Damian mavis you sure know what you're talking about. I have to agree with everything you've said. TKD does give people an edge at other arts. Now im not saying that a TKD practitioner will go and school an MT practitioner (so MTF dont kick my ass lol). I noticed that a fighter in my kyokushin karate dojo (hey man not all karate sucks- kyokushin is full contact, kicks to the leg, uses knees, and elbows), who was a black belt in TKD, could rape so many other fighters because he could kick fucken fast as hell (with supreme accuracy). Which is why I think TKD is has been too discredited. Sure I hate the average TKD school as much as any anti TKD guy does. Too many McDojangs (noticed how i didnt say dojo lol). The point being that TKD is not useless and not all Dojangs suck (yet I do realize that a majority do)

But to answer the question: My vote will go to Muay Thai hands down. TKD SUCKS!! j/k lol

      Damian Mavis is cool!

          • MT, obviously.

Saying that MT would lose in a TKD rules match is irrelevant...because the 'TKD rules' basically rule out almost every kind of decent form of attack there is...lol... kinda like saying 'ok you can fight but dont use your right arm or left leg' and being someone who has conditioned and trained his left arm and right leg..

The answer to TKD vs MT is easy....in a street fight, what would win?

MT would, which means that as an MA, it's better because it has a wider range of moves/flexibility/powerbase.

I agree to the first part. But you can't say MT has better flexability (if you're talking about flexability in combat then please excuse my babbling). But TKD practioners can do things with their legs that I would only dream about. As for a wider range of moves, they have a lot more. Ask Damian Mavis he knows. Im no TKD expert but im sure i read it somewhere. Ur right on powerbase though

              • By flexibility I meant ability to adapt to different situations that require the force from a certain limb, that kinda thing. You're not always gonna have room for kicks.

I think the key word is 'limited'. Lots of MAs are limited, boxing is (if you call it an MA), jujitsu is limited, because they don't cover the use of all limbs/attacks. That's why arts like JKD and MT are considered superior, because their concepts aim for you to develop a good powerbase and a wide range of moves using legs, elbows, punches, headbutts etc. All of which are likely to be very useful in a no holds barred fight.

Obviously this all depends on the fitness and strength of the user. Tyson is a boxer but he's so fkin strong he could probably win most streetfights despite only using his fists. But if you pitted two evenly-matched fighters together, one knowing TKD and one knowing MT or JKD, the MT/JKD guy is more likely to win because he has the knowledge and power to use his bodies' more powerful forms of attack to his advantage, and has a wider range of counter attacks.

I wouldn't say it 'sucks', I always say that any martial art is better than no martial art, and I'm sure it has it's merits. I don't know enough about TKD to talk about all of it's strengths and weaknesses but I do know that they either don't teach or don't allow certain forms of attack. Which makes it a weaker martial art than one like MT which does.

It's true TKD has more flexibility because they need it since most of their kicks are high kicks to head and they do alot of flying jump kicks where as most kicks in Muay Thai are low kicks therefore we don't need as much flexibility as TKD practitioners do,however that doesn't mean flexibility isn't important to us at all.

                    • This is all news to me! Heh, never ceases to amaze me how distorted peoples views are. Most kicks in both arts during fighting and sparring are to the body (or lower for MT) with head level kicks being rare. And a flying kick doesn't exist in TKD sparring, how on earth would someone run up and fly at a guy from one or two feet away? Most of the jumping kicks in TKD are to the body at close range.

                      • I did a flying type kick at a tournament once. I had beat on the guy pretty good and he was a tad dazed. He pushed me pretty good and I ended up on the other side of the ring. So I did a running jump side kick to his head and an upward angle. It shot is head gear off and about 15 foot in the air it landed in the ring over from us. It was a controlled hit so he didn't get hurt but I still got a contact warning. My students thought it was cool so it didn't matter.

They can happen but only when the time is right and when you think you are fast enough to hit it.

But it is funny to see what people who have done little to know TKD think TKD is all about.

Our students were working me over lastnight while I wore the F.I.S.T. suit. mostly leg and centerline body shots and elbows to the head.

It it true that there are a lot more leg kicks in MT and if you are not very flexible MT may be better for you but I have seen many MT guys with incredible flexability. Remeber in Thailand the Thais really like to kick and kick a lot.

                          • The only thing that MT has proven is that it is no match in a mix martial art competition. Like UFC or San Shou or even against a Wrstler or BJJ. A wrestler would easily grab that crescent kick or knee & bury the MT head into the ground.

What does that have to do with MT vs. TKD?

                              • Bottom line is this - There are very few TKD guys who could hold their own against an equally fit Muay Thai fighter, in or out of the ring. There were always some TKD guys who thought they could fight and when they got in the ring going at it full contact, they usually ended up looking at the lights.

I once sparred many years ago with Arlene Limas who won the gold medal in TKD in the Olympics about 20 years or so ago. We were about the same weight as each other and she could kick like hell and was definitely skilled but I walked right thru her. Granted I am male and she is female but I had very little experience at the time other than some boxing and Muay Thai and she was an extremely talented in TKD / Kung Fu. I kept kicking her support leg and covered my head and I was able to pretty much do whatever I wanted.... Sorry but TKD doesn't stand a chance, rules or not.
