Wing Chun or Wing Tsun?

The Ving Tsun Museum in Ohio was founded by Moy Yat stundent Benny Meng. He now teaches another lineage of Wing Chun.

WT WC AND VT are all lineage from Yip Man.

WT (Wing Tsun (Leung Ting)) was a private student of Yip Man and created the WT (IWTA) branch.

The most noticable difference I have seen between the different variations is Wing Tsun has more manuverable foot work. Wing Chun foot work tends to be an equal balance of weight on both legs. Wing Tsun focuses on forward pressure (but not body weight) on the front leg (the one closest to your opponent) and body weight on your back leg for better balance and response time when having to move quickly.

Ving Tsun is the way Yip Man spelled it, so if you see it spelled that way you know it's his lineage.

Geoff Thompson is Geoff Thompson. If he likes a book then he likes a book. But if you want to know what his views on real fighting are, then read what he says about that.

He doesn't mention Wing Chun, and I agree with him!

Keith Kernspecht is a very good businessman; plus, he has copied Thompson's "fence" as a method for dealing with street attackers. Kernspecht is very skillful and a fairly cultivated man, it's not strange that a great martial artist like Thompson would write introductions for his books. However, I practiced "Blitz-defence", and I find that GT's "fence" is easier to use, cos he's not obsessed with WT centre-line and the in-famous "all your weight on the rear leg, please" concept.

kcigam - you seem a decent sort. I am still pretty skeptical about WC. I want to see evidence of PRACTICE, not theory. Is that reasonable?

Can I suggest you read On Single Combat. Why would Geoff Thompson give it a foreward and speak in glowing terms of the book, kernspect and the system he teaches if it was not a practicle system. He also writes in Blitz defence another Wing Tsun book.

Or are you now suggesting Geoff Thompson knows nothing about the reality of fighting ?

Greg - this interview was long ago, and he was referring to a self defence type fight (not a pre arranged martial arts contest). I'm sure he's a good guy. I liked the things he seemed to be doing at the time.
